David And Goliath

David and Goliath Lesson 1

Tomorrow we get to finally talk about Goliath. We will spend 3 class sessions on him. This is such an easy lesson to teach because there is so much stuff out there to help and it is such an exciting story.

In addition to what we’ve used so far, we have a few new activities to enjoy. We bought a plastic armor set during the after Halloween sales. I’ll let each of the kids try it on. Maybe not all in one class, but a few at a time.

I finally finished the flannel graph pictures to where I can use them easily. We made Goliath Magnetic puzzles for each child. I’ll be using Karyn Henley’s Snip’n’Tell for Goliath.

My lesson plan is

Sing:
This Little Light Of Mine — Turn on battery candle. Use it to remind the kids to behave.

I actually had a few kids wear the shepherd’s hats last week. I think I’ll probably have more participation this week. Hopefully I’ll remember the camera and have pictures to share.

Read Shepherd Flip Chart. This is a flip chart that will give the kids some idea of what daily life was like for the shepherd.

Use wooden blocks to make sheepfold. There are enough toy lions for each child to have one. There is just one toy bear. Let the kids act out a how a shepherd protects his sheep. They really enjoyed this Wednesday night. I built the sheepfold. I told them that they could help me next time if they wore a shepherd’s hat. We’ll see how bad they want to do it.

Pass out Wooden Harps. Talk to them about how shepherds (David) used them to pass the time. Emphasize that David sang songs of praise to God..Let them hold them during the next activity.

The Lord’s My Shepherd flip chart. This flip chart will help the kids learn the song from our hymnal. We will just do the first verse. Take the harps back up and put away.

Magnetic David and Goliath Puzzle.

Sing: David

David Flip Read Chart. I will need to read up to and including the Goliath part of the flip chart.

Attendance charts – crowns — We’re using the same crowns we did for Saul. The kids need more chances to put lots of star on the crowns. While the kids are working on this (they are very artistic about the star placement), sing We Want A King.

Move to Storytime area (floor)with Bibles — Call each child one at a time and place a pillow on the floor where that child is to sit. After he/she is seated, call the next child up.

Flannel graphs are up and ready to go. This is very involved this time. There are 5 complete scene changes, and a lot of people involved. I will probably just do David’s anointing and David and Goliath tomorrow.

While we’re on the floor would be a good time to let a few of them try on the armor. Depending on how many kids I have and their energy level, I may let them throw plastic rocks (from my kids Flisher Price castle set) at the Goliath on the wall.

Return to seats.

“Trust and Obey” flip chart. This flip chart is to help teach the song by the same name. It is really for lessons with Saul, but they really like it, so we’ll keep using it for a while.

Sunday’s lesson was lots of fun. It was made even funner (if that’s a word) by the presence of a few visitors. My dear friend, Nell Webber, and her 2 great grandchildren were visiting, and I got them in my class. What a joy.

The Armor was a big hit. I was just able to let one try it on — we were pressed for time. As I was getting on the little boy, I heard one of the 2 visitors lean over to his great grandmother and say, “I’m scared”. I promised him no one would get hurt.

We used the Goliath magnetic puzzles for the first time. Lesson learned: put a border around the puzzle. I’ve been scanning the picture into Print Master and putting a solid colored border around it. To save time, I just enlarged the picture at the copier and made the puzzles. Well, apparently, the kids really use the border as a guide to tell them where the pieces go. I will always add a border from now on.

We’re going to add to the David booklet we started 2 Wed PMs ago. Tonight, The kids will add eyes to a lion. The lion’s mouth opens when the book opens, shuts when it shuts. I glued this page to the Shepherd page.

Due to the extra people and extra activities and lack of time, I forgot to do the attendance charts Sun AM. None of the kids said anything, so we’ll just forget about it. I do need to do it tonight.

David and Goliath Lesson 3

Tomorrow morning will be our last official lesson on Goliath. We will, of course, review him each week, but the main focus will be on other parts of David’s life.

Well, I got very brave and let them throw the plastic rocks at the Goliath on the wall. They really enjoyed it. I’m sure they’ll beg to do it again in the morning.

I’ve added one other thing to our list of David/Goliath activities. A friend made enough cloth pouches for each child. I bought some river rocks. I’ll pour them out on the floor and let the kids choose 5 to put in their pouoh. This is to emphasize that David didn’t wear a bunch of armor and carried only his slingshot and 5 stones. We should probably do this before we throw the plastic rock at Goliath, or they’ll hurl their real stones at him.
